Rudy gets Moving

By A.B. Stoddard - 02/08/07 09:32 AM ET
Did anyone notice that newest '08 Contender Club member Rudy Giuliani scored the commencement address at The Citadel on May 5? Yes, that lucky pro-choice, pro-gun, pro-gay rights presidential candidate gets a chance to charm South Carolinians in Cadet Country right in the heart of silly season.

Giuliani of course has his plans to overcome the obstacle of his record on social issues. He is hoping to fill the un-McCain slot. Despite McCain's proven conservative credentials and his thorough effort to court them, many conservative Republicans still can't stomach the Straight Talker who in 2000 talked straight to the media about the hypocrisy of the Christian right. They have not forgotten it.

Giuliani supporters hope the true-reds will find Giuliani's honest differences refreshing, and his embrace of them sincere. He won't pretend to feel the same way, like Romney the flip-flopper. But he won't fight them like McCain did last time. Fellow blogger Dick Morris thinks Rudy could lock it up by the end of this year, and the polls tell a similar story about the excitement he generates among Republicans. But the comments from Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council to The Wall Street Journal this week revealed neither excitement nor forgiveness. “I don’t see anyone getting the Republican nomination who is not pro-life and a staunch defender of traditional marriage. ... We may not be a large enough group to elect a president, but social conservatives can keep someone from getting the nomination,” he said.

Rudy better hope excitement can overcome reality.
