Will America’s Mayor become America’s next President?

Apparently, now he’s in. After filing exploratory papers last November, Rudy Giuliani has apparently taken the next step towards becoming a full-fledged candidate to become the next president of the United States. The action by America’s Mayor puts him on the same legal footing as Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R).
What this means in practical terms is that Giuliani has stopped dipping his toe in the water and is now serious about running for the presidency. While the political impact of the mayor’s decision is difficult to assess in the short term, I believe Giuliani has dismissed the critics who claim his past is too checkered (gay rights, marriages, etc.) to win. If he didn’t think he could win, I don’t see why Giuliani would subject himself to the pressure and the close scrutiny he is certain to receive.
What is certain is that Giuliani will generate positive press coverage of a Republican presidential candidate not seen since McCain wooed the press on his Straight Talk Express. It remains to be seen whether America’s Mayor will be embraced by social conservatives and voters in early caucus and primary states next year. The race just got a little more interesting for us all to watch.
