It has been a week since Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) launched her exploratory committee on the Internet and other candidates popped up with webcams, Sunday talk show announcements, and trips to the tundra of New Hampshire.
What is surprising is the extent of the Web traffic on the Clinton website. Over 100,000 people signed up as supporters of Hillary within the first 48 hours of her announcement, 150,000 in the first week. During her three days of online chats there were 25,000 questions sent in and over 51,000 registrations. No matter how you cut it, those numbers are impressive and say something about the degree of enthusiasm out there for her candidacy and the power of the Internet in this political year.
We will have to see how the other candidates fare in the coming weeks, but these statistics may be more important than the press coverage in the Manchester Union Leader or the Des Moines Register.
