Dick, You Couldn’t be More Wrong about Hillary’s Candidacy

By Peter Fenn - 01/21/07 05:19 AM ET
Boy, has Dick Morris got it wrong. Still wearing his charcoal-tinted glasses when it comes to the Clintons, his blog post of Friday focused on “Hillary’s Wilting Candidacy.” Wilting? Hardly…unless Dick slept through Saturday’s brilliant unveiling of her obligatory exploratory committee and the ensuring media frenzy.

Even if Dick pulled a Rip Van Winkle on us, the Hillary Rodham Clinton candidacy is off to a very impressive start. She caught the media and the insiders by surprise, pulling off a very impressive “internet fireside chat” that has drawn praise across the political landscape. Announcing a series of internet chats next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, Hillary has taken her New York “listening tour” strategy national. She can’t be in every hamlet and borough personally, but she can be in every living room and study that will have her across America. She is playing on her strength with this well shot and well scripted living room appeal.

This was smart and it will be greeted positively as it plays out in the weeks and months ahead. This will be a great political year with a group of articulate, experienced, solid candidates on both sides. Debates begin immediately, fundraising is already roaring, and they are off to the races at break neck speed. But Hillary’s move this weekend leaves many of the candidates, at least for now, in the dust.
