First 100 Hours? Is Anyone Still Keeping Score?

By Ron Christie - 01/18/07 07:07 AM ET
I’m glad Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and other Democratic luminaries will be on hand to discuss the first 100 hours of legislative activity in the House later this afternoon. I don’t know about you, but not only do I not know what hour we’re on right now, I don’t know if anyone is even paying attention anymore.

When House Leaders promised swift action on such measures as raising the minimum wage, easing restrictions on stem cell research and enacting significant ethics reform in the first 100 hours, the media was abuzz with the new energy and direction underway in the House. Coupled with Nancy Pelosi’s historic election as Speaker of the House, all eyes seemed to be on her end of Pennsylvania Avenue.

How quickly things change. Now, the Speaker’s 100-hour pace seems like yesterday’s news and overshadowed by the 2008 presidential sweepstakes. I’m much more interested in the Obama-Clinton horse race than the latest bill passed in the House that is likely to die a slow death in the Senate.

Don’t take it from me; even Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.)seems frustrated when looking at the frenetic activity in the House. When Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) introduced the broad ethics reform package passed in the House last Thursday, Reid offered the following: [While glad to see things ] “moving along quickly [in the House], frankly I don’t think they’ve spent the time on this that we have.” Perhaps haste does make waste.

So tune in around 3:30 p.m. today to hear about the latest and greatest from our leaders in the House of Representatives. Not me, though – I’ll be looking to see what Sens. Obama and Clinton have next up their sleeves.
