With Bush's Help, Dems Eye Filibuster-proof Majority in the Senate

The politics of the U.S. Senate are getting stickier. Democrats look poised to pick up a seat in Colorado, with the retirement of Sen. Wayne Allard. Rep. Mark Udall is a great candidate and is set up to move into an increasingly “blue” state. The Dems having their 2008 convention there won’t hurt either.
Other Republicans are increasingly nervous, and the fact that there are almost twice as many Repubs as Dems defending their seats is a possible repeat of the tidal wave experienced this past November.
Watch for more Republican retirements from senators who don’t want to defend the war in Iraq, the Bush fiscal irresponsibility and, really, Bush himself. This president is taking down more senators and could get the Dem numbers closer to the 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.
