Osama Must Be Smiling

By Ron Christie - 01/15/07 07:50 AM ET
A terrorist listening to American airwaves on any given day must be pleased with what he’s hearing. Immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on American, lawmakers on either side of the aisle dropped their partisan rhetoric and unified behind the Commander in Chief to take the fight to the terrorists. Nearly six years later, however, how the tables have turned.

Long gone are calls for bipartisan support for fighting and winning the War on Terrorism. Instead, a majority of Democratic lawmakers, to say nothing of a handful of Republicans, have taken the dangerous path of criticizing and micromanaging the President’s handling of the war while offering no coherent alternative of their own. Even worse, these lawmakers have taken to calling the war in Iraq a quagmire, another Vietnam or a cause that has already been lost. Osama himself must be quite pleased – even he couldn’t have predicted that American lawmakers would assist him in waging a PR offensive in the United States that has turned the President’s approval numbers tumbling while our brave servicemen and women remain in harm’s way.

As Vice President Dick Cheney noted during an appearance on Fox News Sunday yesterday: “Remember what bin Laden’s strategy is – he doesn’t think he can beat us in a stand-up fight. He thinks he can force us to quit…that the United States doesn’t have the stomach for a long war.”

Apparently these lawmakers have forgotten they took an oath to defend the country, not just their own approval numbers for re-election. I can’t imagine how the United States would have fared in World War II with such weak- kneed politicians with no stomach for taking the fight to the enemy. The Battle of the Bulge? Pearl Harbor and Midway? These so-called leaders would have proclaimed America was losing the war and thrown in the towel.

Rather than listen to approval polls and 535 micromanagers on Capitol Hill, the President has conferred with his generals and mapped out a strategy to wage and win the War on Terrorism. While mistakes have been made and tactics changed to take the fight to the terrorists, the President understands that this is a war the United States must win.
