  The Coming Democratic Civil War

By Dick Morris - 01/10/07 09:44 AM ET
The left is not going to like the "symbolic" steps now being
contemplated by Democratic leaders in the House and the Senate. The
activists who toppled the Republican majority are going to say: "We
could have had symbolism when we were still in the minority." The
left will demand concrete action to cut back — if not cut off entirely

— funding for the war and to block sending in additional troops. The
timid Democratic response on this issue sets up a fissure in the party
much like that which wrecked its presidential chances in the late '60s
and led to the disastrous convention in Chicago in 1968. The left is
not a force to be trifled with in the Democratic Party and, when
galvanized by a war, it has a truly awesome potential to get out of
control. Mess with it at your peril.
