Good for Teddy Kennedy. The old lion of the Senate has roared again, showing Democrats the best way to stop George Bush from sending more troops to Iraq.
“We cannot simply speak out against an escalation of troops in Iraq,” Kennedy told fellow Democrats. “We must act to prevent it.” And he’s right.
How? Kennedy’s got the answer: requiring Bush to seek prior Congressional approval for more troops or more money for Iraq. It’s a bold move, but the right one.
After all, everybody admits the 2002 resolution authorizing the use of force was based on false premises by the White House. When Congress approved that resolution, they did not envision a war that would drag on for years, cost hundreds of billions of dollars, or claim over 3000 American lives. Bush should no longer be able to piggyback on that original resolution to escalate the war any further.
It’s time to end the madness. Bush wants to send more troops to Iraq? Fine. But only if gets the support of Congress first.
Ted Kennedy’s shown the way. Now if only Democrats have the backbone to follow.
