Justify the Money - if not, Tough Apples

By Bill Press - 01/08/07 08:25 AM ET
In her first Sunday morning appearance as House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi proved to be just what the country needs: a Democrat with balls.

No longer will the Congress merely roll over and rubber stamp whatever George Bush wants in Iraq. Pelosi told CBS’s Bob Schieffer on “Face the Nation” that, when it comes to sending more troops to Iraq, Bush will have no blank check.

He’ll have to prove why more troops are necessary, how much they’ll cost, how long they’ll stay, and what jobs they’ll be doing. And if he can’t make a convincing case, warned Pelosi, tough apples. He won’t get the money to send more troops.

It’s about time! For three and a half years – from authorizing the use of force to spending over $400 billion, the Republican-controlled Congress gave Bush every thing he asked for in Iraq. Without question. Without even holding any hearings. In other words, without doing their job.

Well, those days are over. If Bush is really serious about sending more troops to Congress, first he’s going to have to convince Congress it’s a good idea. No more free lunch. Because Nancy Pelosi’s now in charge. And that’s already made a world of difference.
