Gore Vidal's increasingly tenuous grip on reality

By Ryan J. Davis - 10/28/09 07:22 AM ET

Last week when Gore Vidal said a bunch of stupid things about Barack Obama, I left him alone. He’s old and prone to saying anything that will get his name in print. Remember, he was completely inconsistent during the primaries, flip-flopping between Obama and Clinton. He said things that many people observed were racist. Everyone left him alone.

Today in The Atlantic, Vidal said he never should have supported Obama and “experience mattered.” He then went on to suggest that the 13-year-old girl Roman Polanski had sex with was a “young hooker” and that Roman was only persecuted out of anti-Semitism.

Why does this guy still get interviewed? Can’t someone stop him from embarrassing himself? Doesn’t someone have power of attorney? Isn’t there anyone concerned with this guy’s vanishing legacy?

What’s even worse is that since Sept. 11, 2001, Vidal has been a leading “intellectual” of the 9/11 Truth movement, giving countless interviews to lunatic fringe correspondents like Alex Jones. He'll tell anyone who will listen about how George Bush personally planned 9/11. Seriously, Google has 140,000 pages on Vidal's paranoia.

So please, legit reporters — stop asking this demented man questions. It’s over.

Concrete doesn't expode on impact. The concrete of the Twin Towers exploded into fine dust on impact. Whether Gore Vidal is 'demented' or not, he is right about 9/11 being an inside job.BY Craig Welbourn on 10/28/2009 at 08:53
Mr. Davis gives us another example of why American journalism is well on its way to becoming an oxymoron. He writes: "He'll tell anyone who will listen about how George Bush personally planned 9/11." But can he point to one example of this? I think not. What a sad excuse for political commentary.BY Kevin RYan on 10/28/2009 at 09:16
I find it interesting, around memorial, spotlight turned on Charlie Sheen, the man has disposition to be ridiculed, yet what occurred? We had conspiracy to libel in headlines, and praise in the comments. Instead of declaring him 'demented', public greeted him as hero. As a person who has little sympathy for 'firebrand preachers' such as Alex Jonah, I'd say he overplayed his cards while bringing 'Sheen' into spotlight, which is a good thing for all of us who prefer to deal with facts instead of conspiracies and who would rather remain concerned citizens, than carry the unfortunate libel of truthers. Not that truthers are to blame, after all one cannot but congratulate on some of the tactics that are deployed by the villains, with regards to the divisive and dismissive terminology they are deploying so skilfully. I'll keep my eye on feedback here, I'd estimate that only those who have interest in murder guard the 'official narrative' these days.BY Four Freedoms on 10/28/2009 at 10:01
Gore Vidal is in good company with such people as Robert M Bowman, Edward Peck, J Michael Springmann, Terrell E. Arnold and Ray McGovern. None of them believe the official account of 9/11either.BY Jerrod Soldier on 10/28/2009 at 14:43
Another crap article from yourself.Gore Vidal's opinions concur with other such as EX CIA Analyst Ray McGovern, EX Space Wars program advisor Ret. Col. Bob Bowman, Architect Richard Gage and many others…Your opinions concur with those suffering from cognitive dissonance.BY Erik @ Sydney on 10/28/2009 at 19:07
There's nothing wrong with asking questions. I suppose it's easier to attack Gore Vidal than to actually address his points. Support the 80,000 New Yorkers who want an investigation into the attacks of September 11th, 2001:NYCCAN.orgBY Jon on 10/28/2009 at 21:14
Whether or not you agree with the "Outer Limits" and "Twilight Zone" crowd about 9/11, Vidal's statement, if it is accurate, about Roman Polanski is revealing and so far out of touch it is past laughable… ("He then went on to suggest that the 13-year-old girl Roman Polanski had sex with was a “young hooker” and that Roman was only persecuted out of anti-Semitism.") That statement should be considered ample evidence that the privileged illuminati are so far out of touch with reality that they can't even see it (reality) from where they are. Polanski is a pig (no offense intended to swine). His actions are indefensible and he should spend the rest of his days in jail. That isn't anti-semitic. It's reality and Vidal showed his true intellectual vacuity and dishonesty with that stupid statement. Gore Vidal is no shining example of intellectual honesty or "fire power". He is a sad example of a has been seeking validation of his thinking by a sensationist press.BY Nathan on 10/29/2009 at 13:53
Really?? So how does a jack-hammer work? Send a jetliner loaded with fuel into a solid concrete wall and see what happens. Not that you would ever be prompted to admit a mistake or even allow the smallest possibility that you may be way off-base. To believe that one person could arrange such a massive plot, even with thousands of accomplices, and KEEP IT SECRET is beyond absurd…it's lunatic. Don't acknowledge the videotapes of Osama Bin Laden taking full, and gleeful credit for the atrocity of 9/11. Ignore the Al-Qaeda training camps and intelligence uncovered since 9/11. Forget about those obviously forged tests by credible, and leading, scientists that debunk every single conspiracy theory. All the reality is way more than you could ever hope to understand or comprehend. It would shatter your pitiful, and tenuous hold on life and your hatred of democracy. Here's another tidbit to chew upon…if Osama Bin Laden is actually some mythical character designed on GWB's laptop, why didn't he (GWB/OBL) attack again in the form of bombing the Academy Awards? He could have removed thousands of his most vociferous detractors at one fell swoop. I wish you a speedy recovery from your mental illness.BY NetworkDr on 10/30/2009 at 11:46
For Kevin Ryan - Let me do the work for you, since you apparently don't want to take a chance on being wrong. Put "GORE VIDAL claims george bush planned 9/11" into Google. Skip the first two results which point to this blog and go directly to the next SIX to get a flavor of his feelings toward GWB. I guess the "sad excuse for political commentary" comes from your own piehole?BY NetWorkDr on 10/30/2009 at 12:06
@ NETWORKDRFallac y after fallacy is what you've shared. Who said that they'd managed to keep it secret? What sort of reasoning is that, what sort of secret is it, is it a public secret? You know, public did take a notice that 9/11 Commission failed to notice the fall of WTC 7. You know, Able Danger may be lost for the people who suffer from 'global dementia', but it is as real as you can get. Do you know what Cofer Black said about Ms. Rice's refusal to acknowledge the 'clear and present' danger? He said: 'The only thing we didn’t do was pull the trigger to the gun we were holding to her head.' Do you know that two of the hijackers were living across the street from the headquarters of NSA? Do you know that whistleblowers blow that whistle so hard it even resonates in not as free as it will to be mainstream media? Why would the good folks who shared their knowledge be in exile or worse? Do you remember initial response of Tim Osman. OBL said: 'I would like to assure the world that I did not plan the recent attacks, which seems to have been planned by people for personal reasons,' and he reiterated that stance before UBL took the stage… Patriot Act on pretence? Misprision of treason and complicity in mass murder, you and your ilk have no excuse.BY Four Freedoms on 10/31/2009 at 17:06
