Capitulate or compromise?

By Armstrong Williams - 07/15/11 10:14 AM ET

Many Republicans are concerned about whether they will be blamed for economic meltdown if the debt ceiling isn't increased. This is a very short-sighted concern. If they capitulate to the Democrats and the president, who want nothing more than to continue the tax-and-spend policies that have placed us in this crisis position, we will certainly find ourselves in the same position as Greece and other European nations that have pursued such policies to their own demise. If in fact they're willing to take a stand, they still might be blamed, but on the other hand might be seen as heroes. Many people are not stupid enough to swallow, hook, line and sinker, the idea that our refusing to exacerbate the debt problem is a sign of irresponsibility as opposed to one of wisdom.

If we are to salvage our nation, some of us must be mature enough to look at the long-term effect of what we're doing and not just the next election. I think they will find that they will be richly awarded in the political arena for going against the Democratic tide and taking a stand now. The Democrats are driving our country into the poorhouse and the Republicans must not back down. To capitulate and to compromise are two different things, but in this case the lines are blurring; what I mean to say is that a compromise on the debt ceiling should be reached on what is in the best interest of "We the People.”
