Incentivizing entrepreneurship
How many people in this nation have lost their jobs through no fault of
their own? How many hardworking people with families have been laid off
due to our poor economy, an economy bound only to get worse by continued
layoffs?
How many are living a substandard life in comparison to the people who
are on the government dole — free housing, food stamps, everything? If
they are, what is wrong with this picture? How does someone who works
hard and then gets laid off come up shorter than someone suckling on the
teet of entitlement programs? Aren’t we actively incentivizing laziness
and dependency?
Earlier this year I took a trip out to Salt Lake City, Utah, and was amazed at what I found. Every mention of the trip begat the response, “Oh, you’re traveling to Mormon country [cringe].”
Maybe, just maybe, the rest of the country needs to take a cue from Mormon culture. The children are raised to be entrepreneurs. They are surrounded by it, so much so that they might even take it for granted, like fish in water.
There will always be a role of our government in the lives of its citizens. That role should be a limited and necessary one. While government can and do some things very well, a government that governs least, in the long term governs best.
We need a desperate return of entrepreneurialism to the mainstream. Let us remind our countrymen that no matter their plight in life, and no matter the insurmountable odds, everyday Americans have shown us time and time again that you can accomplish the American dream of entrepreneurship and pass it on to future generations.
