Not only that, insisted Steele, it was the wrong war to begin with. “One thing you don’t do is engage in a land war in Afghanistan,” he explained. “Because everyone who’s tried over a thousand years of history has failed.”

Now, that may be a stupid thing for the chairman of the Republican Party to say — after all, the war in Afghanistan was started by President George W. Bush and enjoys almost unanimous support among members of Congress.

But on the merits, Michael Steele is absolutely correct. Ever since last year’s surge, the war in Afghanistan has, indeed, become Obama’s war. And history does indicate that the United States will be no more successful creating a strong, central government in Afghanistan than the British or Russians who were there before us.

So, on Afghanistan, Michael Steele was right. He’s just chairman of the wrong party. Do you think he might agree to become chairman of the DNC?
