Here the Dems go again with Cousin Racism

By Armstrong Williams - 09/15/09 09:54 AM ET

Who would have thought that racial issues would become worse — not better — with an American president who happens to be black?

Listening to Democrats dismiss opponents of President Barack Obama’s healthcare proposal as racists, I couldn’t help but wonder whether that were the case. According to Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) and South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn (D), all Republicans who oppose Obama’s plan are racist. New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd said as much by insinuating that the GOP white guys in the room can’t resist the urge to shout “Boy!” whenever they see the president.

Meanwhile, the country is on the brink of a healthcare crisis. Serious debate is needed on whether Obama’s plan will bankrupt the country. Yet these issues fall by the wayside when Democrats simply label and dismiss their opponents as racists. Admittedly, Rep. Joe Wilson’s (R-S.C.) decision to bark, “You lie!” lacked tact, respect and the professionalism expected of a member. But it also underscored a seething fear and discontent over whether Obama’s plan will blast a black hole into our economy. This is a very real concern — and one that has nothing to do with race.

By reflexively labeling and dismissing all opposition as racists, the Democrats are confusing the issues and short-circuiting genuine debate. This is both selfish and alarming. By the way, if you think about this deep enough, one could conclude that it's the Democrats who are racist, and certainly not the Republicans.
