Grayson beats Republicans at their own game

By Bill Press - 10/01/09 05:34 PM ET

Good for Freshman Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida. He’s the only Democrat to fight back against Republican lies on healthcare — and give them a taste of their own medicine

They say “socialized medicine.” He says, “Don’t get sick!” They say “death panels.” He says, “Die quickly!”

Expressing shock, shock, shock at such straight talk, Republicans insist that Grayson’s just as guilty of inappropriate conduct as crazy Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.). Puh-leeze! There’s a big difference between calling the president “a liar” on the floor of the House — and simply telling the truth.

Republicans are also demanding that Grayson apologize. Forget it! Did Republican Sen. Tom Coburn (Okla.) apologize when he said Obama’s healthcare plan will “absolutely end up killing more people than it saves?” Did Republican Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (Fla.) apologize when she said Democrats had released a bill “which essentially said to America’s seniors: Drop dead”?

Hell, no. And Alan Grayson shouldn’t apologize, either.

Let’s face it. The only reason Republicans are so upset about Grayson’s remarks is because he ripped off their mask and exposed their true face: Republicans don’t want healthcare reform. They don’t care about the millions of Americans who have no health insurance today because they can’t afford it. They have put forth no plan of their own, either in the House or Senate.

Thanks to Alan Grayson, now the whole world knows the truth: Republicans have offered nothing on healthcare reform except the status quo: “Don’t get sick.”
