Legislative malpractice
It has famously been said that America is a nation of laws, not people.
Not the case when it comes to applying the laws of this country to its elected leaders.
Amazingly, Congress is not covered by many of the statutes that it applies to the rest of the country. Exhibit A: President Barack Obama’s healthcare proposal.
Though President Obama campaigned on the idea of providing the American public with the same healthcare options currently available to members of Congress, this is simply a lie. The current proposal — like most pieces of legislation — exempts members of Congress from participation.
Translation: Congressional health plans, with their wide choice of provider options, will not be available to the general public.
Can you imagine how the landscape of this country would change if our elected leaders were actually subject to their decisions? If the laws passed by Congress actually applied to Congress, true universal healthcare would be a civil right.
Isn’t it obscene that our so-called leaders can pass laws that apply to the rest of the country, but not to themselves? People of all political backgrounds must demand that our elected leaders live by the laws that they deign to pass for the rest of the country.
The only way that we will achieve workable healthcare is if our leaders have a stake in the game. Right now, that is not the case.
