Harry Reid throws the public-option touchdown pass

By Brent Budowsky - 10/26/09 03:36 PM ET

Looks like game, set, match for the public option with the move by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to go all out for the public option, with a provision that would let states opt out, which should get all Democrats united to kill the Republican filibuster.

It was a master stroke. President Barack Obama, who has maneuvered against the public option behind the scenes, has thrown his weight behind Reid, which virtually guarantees that Reid will have 60 votes in the Senate.

There will be more fight to come, but the Senate will pass the Reid version of the public option, the House will pass a public option that will probably be even stronger, and from all over America there will be calls, letters, e-mails and television ads that will wage the fight until the fight is won.

If you are going to write about the news, you should read the news. Senator Nelson already stated he wouldn't vote for it. It appears Lieberman also has some reservations. I wouldn't doubt there are a few others who don't want to get thrown out of office. Following Reid at this point, when it appears he won't hold onto his royal throne, doesn't make much sense.BY Robert Rosencrans on 10/26/2009 at 18:29
What happens if every state opts out?BY Bzdashek on 10/26/2009 at 18:58
Screw the people, call it a touchdown.BY Mark X on 10/26/2009 at 19:25
Brent, where in God's name do you get your news? Barrack Obama was maneuvering AGAINST the public option behind the scenes? Right, we've seen this coming since June. The script was The one and only Greatest President ever pretends he is willing to sacrifice the public option until the Harry and Nancy show convince him that "it is for the good of the people". It's as scripted as an episode of Friends and you want us to act all amazed. WOW.BY Patrick Michael on 10/26/2009 at 19:46
How can we trust these people with health care. Look what happened with the swine flu vaccine. Read this link:http://americaspeaksin k.com/2009/10/swine-flu-what-to-do/BY Bruce on 10/27/2009 at 06:30
The public option will pass. The states that opt out will eventually opt in. They will have little choice. Reid will get re-elected due to the public option alone. Everyone might as well get used to it. The party of cult is dying on the vine and the sooner the better. We will get some adults that do something besides vile attacks. Some true conservatives that put country before party. After the public option is law then we can go for term limits and get the old whales out of Congress.BY Wayne on 10/27/2009 at 09:53
wayne, you almost have to TRY to make so many wrong statements in a single post. nicely done!BY johnny on 10/27/2009 at 11:29
Please put the public option on the floor and we can vote everyone who votes for it out in the next election. The majority of voters are Conservative and we won't see lefty-loons winning public office ever again in this country. Obama and his minions are one and done. He is spending us into oblivion and he won't protect our borders. That's the reason I never voted for W. To [***] with compassionate conservatism, we need a real Conservative to step up and even the government controlled media will be helpless to stop Her or Him.BY Bill on 10/27/2009 at 13:02
The public option was bound to come up again. It was only a matter of time as the worst health care system in the civilized world keeps on getting worse. All of the 26 lies about Obamacare can't kill the truth. http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/twenty-six-lies-about-hr-3200/BY flyfshr1cd on 10/27/2009 at 17:39
The electorate and the blue dogs will not be fooled by this one. It is a trojan horse. I am so sceptical that I believe that it is a ploy by Reid to kill the public option, by providing him political cover with the public option progressives him in party.BY Nick Rao on 10/27/2009 at 20:55
