ObamaCare endorsements: What the bribe was

By Dick Morris - 11/06/09 11:22 AM ET

By Dick Morris and Eileen McGann

As the suicidal Democratic congressmen proceed to rubber-stamp the Obama healthcare reform despite the drubbing their party took in the ’09 elections, the president trotted out the endorsements of the AMA and the AARP to stimulate support. But these — and the other endorsements — his package has received are all bought and paid for. Here are the deals:

· The American Medical Association (AMA) was facing a 21 percent cut in physicians’ reimbursements under the current law. Obama promised to kill the cut if they backed his bill. The cuts are the fruit of a law requiring annual 5-6 percent reductions in doctor reimbursements for treating Medicare patients. Bravely, each year Congress has rolled the cuts over, suspending them but not repealing them. So each year, the accumulated cuts threaten doctors. By now, they have risen to 21 percent. With this blackmail leverage, Obama compelled the AMA to support his bill … or else!

· The AARP got a financial windfall in return for its support of the healthcare bill. Over the past decade, the AARP has morphed from an advocacy group to an insurance company (through its subsidiary company). It is one of the main suppliers of Medi-gap insurance, a high-cost, privately purchased coverage that picks up where Medicare leaves off. But President Bush-43 passed the Medicare Advantage program, which offered a subsidized, lower-cost alternative to Medi-gap. Under Medicare Advantage, the elderly get all the extra coverage they need plus coordinated, well-managed care, usually by the same physician. So more than 10 million seniors went with Medicare Advantage, cutting into AARP Medi-gap revenues.

Presto! Obama solved their problem. He eliminates subsidies for Medicare Advantage. The elderly will have to pay more for coverage under Medigap, but the AARP — which supposedly represents them — will make more money. (If this galls you, join the American Seniors Association, the alternative group; contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .)

· The drug industry backed ObamaCare and, in return, got a 10-year limit of $80 billion on cuts in prescription drug costs. (A drop in the bucket of their almost $3 trillion projected cost over the next decade.) They also got administration assurances that it will continue to bar lower-cost Canadian drugs from coming into the U.S. All it had to do was put its formidable advertising budget at the disposal of the administration.

· Insurance companies got access to 40 million potential new customers. But when the Senate Finance Committee lowered the fine that would be imposed on those who don’t buy insurance from $3,500 to $1,500, the insurance companies jumped ship and now oppose the bill, albeit for the worst of motives.

The only industry that refused to knuckle under was the medical device makers. They stood for principle and wouldn’t go along with Obama’s blackmail. So the Senate Finance Committee retaliated by imposing a tax on medical devices such as automated wheelchairs, pacemakers, arterial stents, prosthetic limbs, artificial knees and hips and other necessary accoutrements of healthcare.

So these endorsements are not freely given, but bought and paid for by an administration that is intent on passing its program at any cost.

If you are an AARP member and do not agree with their support of the government run health support then shred your AARP card and send it to the AMERICAN SENIORS ASSOCIATION ("ASA"). ASA is a moderate organization that offers similar benefits but is against the government run health care. Send them your shredded AARP card and get an extra year membership at no cost:http://www.americanseniors .org/Pages/home.aspx?Images=/images/index_new.gifSend a message to AARP and support an organization that is in line with its constituents. AARP death of a thousand cuts, have at thee.Pass this message along.BY Bubbette on 11/06/2009 at 11:57

This doesn't smell or taste like the "New Era of Responsibility" that we were promised. But given the trail of broken campaign promises left in his wake so far it isn't really surprising. It is just another example of Washington giving to the big corporations while sacrificing the the Blue Collar people oin this country. They all seem to forget that while they serve "at the pleasure of the President" they all are supposed to "serve at the pleasure" of citizens. It is time for Americans to come to the realization that it is our vote that has to be used as the police force of those who represent. At the first sign that they are morphing from Representative's to Rulers we need to take them out.BY Randy Miller on 11/06/2009 at 13:34

I'm shocked and dismayed the president can destroy our freedoms. Where in the world are our senators and respresatives. They are our elective officals. There are so many of us who are praying so hard for our Country.BY Elaine Kerschbaum on 11/06/2009 at 15:35
Plain and simple: The AMA supports the House bills because they take our nation closer to needed improvements in our health care system. The bills significantly expand access to affordable, high quality health insurance coverage that cannot be lost or denied because of pre-existing conditions, make investments in initiatives that improve the quality of care and repeal the broken Medicare payment formula that threatens access to care for seniors, baby boomers and military families. Our nation has an extraordinary opportunity to build on what works and fix whatBY AmericanMedicalAssoc on 11/06/2009 at 15:46
AmericanMedical Assoc, your post informs me of nothing and provides no specifics… a cut and paste job from a formal statement.BY Kathryn on 11/06/2009 at 16:09
The fallacy of the health care reform debate begins with the thought process that it is up to the government to provide us with healthcare. Where in the constitution is this defined? Another untruth is that this bill will cover americans and fix the problem, it does nothing of the sort. Grandiose arguments are thrown about calling for the halt of disease and finding cures, well this is far from the truth. The CBO says that this bill will cover approx 95% of the population. Well quick math says that 5% of lets 430 million is about 21.5 million, wasn't the argument that this is so needed was that there are 30 million uninsured (or thereabouts). We are going another trillion in debt to cover 8.5 million, not a good cost/benefit.This bill does nothing to truly address competition in a responsible way, there is no playing field for the insurance companies and biotech is not taken into account, while the admin seems to now have gone into partnership with big pharma, not a good recipe. There are truly serious issues in the health industry this bill is not the answer.BY Winfield on 11/06/2009 at 16:13
What percentage of practicing M.D.'s belong to the AMA? I don't. We all belong to our specialty organization (Internal Med/OB/ Cards/ Ortho). Over 19 sub specialty groups have written a letter to stop this bill.http://vocusgr.vocus.com/grconvert1/ViewAttachment.aspx?EID=W5UjF IYb9rNE76Kg9u5W RrDedJBW0ZypEvX /hWEtsY=BY Brett on 11/06/2009 at 16:36
In addition to Morris blog is that 1) AMA holds the rights to the method of computerized medical records and stands to benefit substantially, and 2) adding to AARP supplemental coverage, AARP thru their insurance arm will now be able to institute a supplemental coverage for the public option. This could be substantial billions.BY JD Plus on 11/07/2009 at 04:38
