The absurdity of trying 9/11 terrorists in New York City

By Armstrong Williams - 11/20/09 11:11 AM ET

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who blithely admits to planning the Sept. 11 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in downtown New York, deserves to be put to death. Less clear is Attorney General Eric Holder’s statement last week that New York City was the best venue to pursue the case against them.

This is plainly absurd. Holding the trial in New York puts a big bull’s-eye on the downtown area. It is common sense that holding the trial in the twice-attacked lower Manhattan community makes it more likely New York will be attacked again. Moreover, the cost of providing security for the trial could easily exceed $100 million for a city that is already embroiled in a fiscal crisis.

Notably, Mohammed previously asked to plead guilty before a military commission, and to be executed. Get it? There is no legal reason to hold the hearing in a civilian court as opposed to a military tribunal. A civilian hearing dramatically increases the chances that crucial evidence will be disallowed, that classified material will be disclosed or that Mohammed could get off on a technicality.

Holder had no problem trying other terrorist suspects in military tribunals. Should the 9/11 mastermind really receive the best chance of acquittal? Should the man who engineered the worst terror attack on American soil be given a national platform for his radical ideology? Should the residents of New York be forced to relive the tragedy for the sake of a legal farce?

You be the judge!

I don't think you have written anything super brilliant. Every one knows this, including administration. There MUST be a reason to do so and you will get to know along with all others. Until then, try something else.BY Donahue on 11/20/2009 at 13:16
Mohammad pleaded guilty? Hmmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder if Williams would plead guilty as well if 90 gallons of water were poured down his throat in over 40 sessions of waterboarding. In MY country, admissions of guilt are not permitted when elicited by Gestapo torture tactics. The Conservatives have tried in vain with efforts from AWOL Bush, and 3X draft dodger Cheney to take away the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law. I welcome this trial of Mohammad in NYC in order to expose to the American public how close we were to loosing our Democratic rights to these Amerinazi thugs. THEY are the ones who should stand on trial!BY Chris on 11/20/2009 at 16:13
KSM should have turned up missing/dead a long time ago. He certainly doesn't deserve to be tried in NY, the military tribunals were more than adequate to facilitate his trial. Ironic isn't it that this man is responsible for the death and dismemberment of untold thousands and yet the prissy left gets all worked up about pouring water over his precious head that it causes him discomfort. He chose this path by attacking and targetting the US, he is lucky to be alive.BY Winfield  on 11/20/2009 at 16:39
If you'd read your 6th,7th, and 8th bill of rights you know thateveryone is entitled to a fair trial of their peers. We were notin a war before 2001. These alleged terroists are not warcriminals. Most of the damage was against civilian targets i.e N.Y. City. And that's where they should standtrial.BY Arlon Stevens on 11/21/2009 at 14:56
So what you pro trial people are saying is that you don,t really know if they are guilty of killing approximately 3,000 innocent people. Sounds to me as though you think they are not guilty in your eyes because you believe they were justified. So if they get off on a technicality thats ok with you. Obviously you didn,t lose a loved one in this massacre. You all are not even qualified to judge unless you have. As for not being in a war in 2001, that attack WAS an act of war. You bloggers can,t possibly American.BY Poston on 11/28/2009 at 11:39
