Top Republican apologizes to BP!

By Brent Budowsky - 06/17/10 11:08 AM ET

I almost fell out of my chair when I heard Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) apologize to BP this morning. Keep in mind, Mr. Barton is the senior Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, with oversight over offshore drilling, and he is apologizing to BP?

Where do Republicans get these guys? As BP has deceived the nation about the size of the spill and delayed making payments to good citizens facing the hardships caused by BP's disaster, a senior Republican is worried that BP's feelings are hurt?

Let me be clear, I do not believe either party in Congress has distinguished itself. Neither party in Congress has done the oversight, over many years, that might have prevented this disaster. Both parties bear some responsibility.

But the ridiculous apology by the most senior Republican on the most important committee regarding offshore drilling was hilarious and absurd. I am truly sorry that BP's feelings have been hurt, but far more sorry and angry about lives that were lost, and livelihoods that are being destroyed, by the sheer greed of BP.

It is great that Republicans such as Mr. Barton are showing the voters their true colors as Election Day approaches. If the Republicans want to run as the party of apologies to BP, make my day, and let’s rumble! I can't wait to see what Keith Olbermann, Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart do with this one.
