Why Weiner won't resign

By Cheri Jacobus - 06/09/11 04:56 PM ET

My take is that he needs the paycheck. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) understands it may be — uh — slightly difficult for him to find gainful employment should he resign as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives after being caught sending explicit photos of his genitalia to young women on Twitter.

Seriously — who would hire this guy?

I also find it rather implausible his pregnant wife, Huma, will stay married to him since their marriage is less than a year old and she is young. She will find someone else to marry and help raise her child after a bit of time passes and the glare of the media spotlight dims somewhat.

Anthony Weiner understands perfectly well his congressional colleagues want him gone ASAP, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). But he won't leave until someone secures his financial future. Weiner is very likely waiting for Democrats to present him with his golden parachute before he agrees to resign and drift off into the ether. Some big party donor will need to cough up a job for him somewhere in Siberia, or at least the political equivalent of Siberia.

Will it be the Clintons who choreograph his exit from public life? Pelosi? New York Democrats with an assist from Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.)? Getting rid of Weiner will cost someone a lot of money ...
