President Obama has the right view and the upper hand, but a Gallup poll closed the week with the president upside down with 41 percent approval and 52 percent disapproval. The key point for Obama is that his major political interest, by far, would be for Democrats to recapture the House in 2014, which looks more likely today than it did a week ago.

The odds grow with every Republican-induced government shutdown and, heaven forbid, a Republican-induced default and economic crash.
