Ugly white Southern male Republicans on parade.

That’s what we’ve seen the last couple of days in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Ugly white Southern male Republican jerks on parade, piling on and trying to derail Sonia Sotomayor from confirmation to the Supreme Court.

Never would these ugly white Southern male Republicans treat another white male with the same disrespect.

Sotomayor has an impressive, 17-year record on the bench. She has more judicial experience than any Supreme Court nominee in the last 100 years. She has an inspiring personal story.

But we didn’t hear about any of that from those Republican senators. They completely ignored her record. Except for the New Haven, Conn., firefighters, they asked no questions about the 3,000 cases she ruled on, either alone or together with other judges.

Instead, they pounded over and over again on the so-called “wise Latina” statement — one sentence! — made in a speech eight years ago.

And, despite her record to the contrary, they accused her of being a racist and incapable of being a fair judge because the president, not Judge Sotomayor, said he wanted someone with “empathy” on the court.

For Republicans, it was a sad, demeaning, disgusting and despicable performance.

But there was no doubt of the outcome. At the end of the day, Sotomayor came across as the calm, smart, extremely knowledgeable, patient and thoughtful judge she is. Republican senators came across as the mean, ugly, sexist creatures they are.

So far, GOP senators have not hurt Sonia Sotomayor. But they’ve hurt themselves — badly!
