Glenn Beck, enemy of the people

By Bernie Quigley - 10/26/09 08:11 AM ET

I was once formally forbidden to talk to any student or professor at the college I worked at after helping a few students organize a conference about the killings taking place in Bosnia. When I was seen talking briefly to a student in passing on the campus later, I was fired. This at a time when I had three children under the age of 8 and my wife, on the farm with the kids, was eight months pregnant with our fourth. I worked then as a temp doing odd jobs, including cleaning toilets at a local Sara Lee factory. When we finally sold our beautiful little farm in the hills of North Carolina we had lost $40,000 and were down to our last $25. But it remains the proudest moment of my working life. Writers like to be censored. It puts even the inconsequential in league with the greatest. So I know how Glenn Beck is feeling this week: proud and honorable. Everyone at Fox should feel the same.

Glenn Beck has been officially declared the Enemy of the People by Big Brother. His firm, Fox News, has been virtually banned from presidential press conferences. In an administration now well-known for its lack of perspective, this is a sizable public relations blunder. Last week Beck was just a folksy, funky and entertaining trickster on a second-tier TV station. This week he is the government’s officially sanctioned Enemy of the People. Last week he was just a chump. Now he’s a national hero.

Not since the Keystone Kops arrested screenwriter Dalton Trumbo for peeing in his neighbor’s yard in the big Hollywood Commie Crackdown of the McCarthy era have the federales staged such a public farce.

Bernie, do you have a growing jealousy over Glen Beck and his no found popularity? Why can't you and the rest of your lazy peers find something greater than baloon boy to get played out on and do some investigative reporting.BY David Hamlin on 10/26/2009 at 11:18
I know how you feel, I watch Beck everyday and since Obama declared war on him, I feel very proud that I am watching!Keep up the good work Mr. Beck!BY Rob on 10/26/2009 at 11:38
There is an old business adage that a knock is a boost to your competition. Obama and the White House League of Sycophants are idiots and this proves it. Since they've attacked Rush Limbaugh and Beck, those two have experienced skyrocketing ratings.BY Robert Rosencrans on 10/26/2009 at 11:49
Beck is the only person that tells what I want to hear :the TRUTH !BY DOT on 10/26/2009 at 11:53
I think Beck is a fearmongering goon and need to be removed from the air. A lot of the Fox commentators are not showing and verbally telling the entire truth. You all who do not doubt that Fox is misleading a lot of what they published should go to; www.mediamatters.com.Get informed!!!!!BY P on 10/26/2009 at 12:43
You people are missing the whole point! Obama has often engaged in a policy of promoting the extremes of his opposition to marginalize the other side. Remember when they were pushing Rush Limbaugh as the leader of the republican party? This is the same strategy and all you chumps are falling for it. Glenn Beck is a verified idiot and everyone but the extreme conservatives and libertarians know it. He is VERY distasteful to independents. The more that Glenn Beck and Fox News become the leaders of the republican party, the better the democrats do in 2010. Especially since Glenn Beck is likely to support some Ron Paul-esque third party candidate. Can you imagine if all of Beck's followers vote for libertarians and conservative party candidates in 2010? Victory for the dems would be assured. You guys have to think of the big picture here.BY Ryan on 10/26/2009 at 12:49

P, if you don't like FOX or Beck, then go watch MNBC. Sounds like they are more to your liking. At least Beck raises issues that the big three don't or won't unless forced to by public ourcry, i.e., ACORN, Van Jones, … The last time I read our constitution, we still have free speach…although Obama and sounds like you would like to see that "changed" too. NOT!BY Linda on 10/26/2009 at 13:12
Bernie—->>"I worked then as a temp doing odd jobs, including cleaning toilets at a local Sara Lee factory." That was pretty much the apex of your career, Bernie, and it's been all downhill since…BY TruthfulTerry on 10/26/2009 at 13:32
Have some perspective people. Some three million Americans believe the moon landing was a hoax. Some three million people also watch Glenn Beck on a regular basis. Draw your own conclusions. In case you can't, here it is: unfortunately there will always be an audience for idiocy, and Beck is certainly a buffoon of epic proportions. In defense of Mr. Beck, though, he quite rightly cites freedom of speech as his most lethal weapon, and he brandishes it with considerable prowess. Unfortunately, his self-righteous marches into verbal battle mostly come off as insane rants, with virtually no meaningful discussion or dialogue. So ultimately one can't escape the inevitable conclusion that this is a nut who, powered by broadcast TV, has the ability to reach out to the other three million nuts running amok in US society.BY Brigance on 10/26/2009 at 17:10
