Allow me to retort ...

By A.B. Stoddard - 11/20/09 11:40 AM ET

Tom from Illinois, a conservative who is one of my best-informed readers, wrote me yesterday to alert me to the storm I had kicked up with my column on Sarah Palin. Very few of the comments that follow my columns are useful — most are angry, accusatory and partisan, written by wingers on the left and right who will never be happy with anything they see under my byline. I credit and criticize both parties, respect people and ideas in both parties, and value bipartisanship and independence. It's lonely in the middle.

But what I found this week were record-setting obnoxious salvos from people we can call the Palin Protectors. I want to point out that there were some notes to me that were critical, but quite constructive, from ABFAN and Tim. The rest of the comments were from people who called me "a disgrace," "an idiot," "a stupid liberal bitch," "another MSNBC-style hate-filled left winger with Palin Derangement Syndrome" and added references to how my life must lack happiness, how I may be sexually confused and may even be a lesbian. Let's hear it for Mike P and Jim — perhaps the Jim who blasted me earlier but later apologized? — who asked why The Hill publishes vulgar comments that don't advance public discourse. Good question.

In my column about Palin I pointed out the obvious — that she is engaging in payback, that she can't stay on her own talking points and that she is making it pretty clear that she could consider running for president in 2012. I never called her stupid or any of the other things I am accused of in the comments section. By the way, Palin Protectors should know that "God and Todd" is a Palin quote about her mantra for living; I can't take credit for making that one up. If you didn't know that, you haven't been watching enough of her interviews. In addition, Sarah the Barracuda is a nickname from her school days, and finally, it should be noted that not only do I not write headlines, but columns are not articles and there is a distinct difference between the two.

Call me old-fashioned — I have been called everything else — but I believe that we can never make progress on any front if our public debate is fueled by hate, anger and vitriol. Where are the people who are interested in hearing a different opinion, and who are open to differing views? They are turning away from this toxic experience, and I understand why. We need them back.

AB - I just read your last column and you are right some of the posts were over the top. People seem to be venting a lot of anger perhaps because there is absolutely no good news out there and they are frustrated. That's no excuse though. Sarah Palin touches a nerve, that's for sure. Some love her and others don't like her because she reminds them of their mother wagging the index finger. She is busy making a new career advancing her book, attending public speaking gigs, and juggling it all pretty well. She's paying the bills, legal fees, and maybe putting some towards a future campaign. Maybe she will become the next Alan Keyes and make it a part-time job to run for president, right another new book, and have a radio show to boot… who knows. Whatever, I wish her the best. Anyway, AB - Keep writing, I enjoy you, and have a Great Thanksgiving!BY JFK-HRC on 11/20/2009 at 13:47
It is lonely in the middle. But really, thats where most of us reside. I appreciate a person like you, A.B., who can call it straight from either side. But you don't need to look just to your responders…all you really need to do is look at the articles posted here from the likes of Morris or Armstrong and others to find the real hate, anger and vitriol. It's the media that spreads and fosters the hate and, unfortunately, you are all part of the problem. Call it like it is, but be sure to call out others in your profession as well.BY Al, KS on 11/20/2009 at 14:27
AB,Never read the comments with the expectation that they will be fair or useful. Never read them as a worthy criticism about you. Read them like you would read a thermometer (sp?). Read them to take the temperature of the people who would spend time to read your column and then respond in either a hate-filled way or in a luke-warm way. If you get the people fired up, no matter what they say, that is an accomplishment. And don't ever take it personally. It's not worth it.BY john Feehery on 11/20/2009 at 15:40
Dear AB: The comments you cited are disgusting. They prove that the end of adolescence never arrives for some of us. I admit to being something of a Palin Protector. I find her views and rhetoric refreshing. I think she got, and continues to get, a terribly raw deal from the media, including some conservative columnists, because she does not have the resume that our elites insist on. She has every right to complain. And if she makes a fortune doing so with her book, more power to her! Perhaps then she can pay the legal expenses incurred in defending herself from the tidal wave of frivolous and malicious lawsuits that crippled her capacity to govern.BY Brian John Murphy on 11/20/2009 at 20:49
A.B.,You are much gentler than I would have been.We don't need another Cult of Personality canidate that could get Obama a second term (assuming he runs). There are many much more substantial criticisms to be made of Palin that her appearance and shallow responses that betray a lack of critical thinking.I think it is regrettable the way she has been treated by the media, but she very much comes off as just another political opportunist. And contrary to the spin, I do not believe Palin's endor[***]t of Hoffman helped him. It fact, it may have hurt. Hannity and the rest of the party hacks need to chill out pushing this woman down our throats..02 from an Independent conservative in CA.BY Andy on 11/21/2009 at 08:23
AB, I'm not much of a fan of yours, and I think most of your columns reflect a timid lack of commitment to any point of view, though on balance, I think we are just on different sides on many issues. That being said, maybe you have found a niche; maybe you should take to heart what Feehery says. As long as you get people fired up, that's an accomplishment. Well, it works for Beck! And it worked for you, too. Too bad that the knuckle-draggers took out their frustrations with such vile comments. What is most noteworthy to me, is that so many delusional Palin fans really think that they represent the majority of 'real' Americans. Real Americans had their say in November '08 and they voted for Obama-Biden and against McCain-Palin. Sure the majority of Americans are amused by the Palin saga just like they were about Balloon Boy. It's a daily media circus and Palin is just a clown. The majority of America is laughing at her. Sorry you had to endure such hateful responses, but I hope this doesn't deter you from following this new tack of actually taking a position rather than the usual boring tending right middle-of-the-road pap.BY Smilinjack on 11/21/2009 at 22:40
Dear Ms. Stoddard,I read the Hill everday and am an engaged citizen. I'm middle aged and appreciate your writing and Q/A videos. This is the first time I have commented.I do not belong to any political party or organization, but have voted, since given the legal right. I keep up with the nation's issues and read extensively; especially views that differ from mine. I'm extremely concerned about our discourse in the public arena. There is too much rancor, politics, self promotion and interests on all sides, which is destroying the fabric of our nation and discouraging the people.I desire public servants who put America first, not party,K Street, or any other self interest group. I would like to see self controlled, respectful, informed folks who are working hard to be problem solvers. It is easy to mug for the cameras, spend money, and blame the other guy, that's what kids do. Today, we have too many adults acting like children. There are many hard working public servants, that you never hear or see on camera. They are trying to get the people's business done; but their effort is in spite of, not because.Bridges are going to have to be built, compromise, and consensus returned to the public area, if America survives.I believe in term limits, so there would be no more professional politicians. They should return to private life as our founding fathers did…to have understanding how their fellow citizens live. Washington is out of touch with the citizens and that puts us on a dangerous path. America is too great a nation to be destroyed by such foolish childish politics on all sides. You said it was lonely in the middle…I wanted you to know that you were not alone. Keep up the good work!I'll be reading and watching the videos, and making my contribution to our nation in my family, neighborhood, community, and state. See you around in America's backyard..Regards,E. FosterBY Earnestine Foster on 11/23/2009 at 15:08
