How can the Speaker praise the strong employment numbers announced today, which clearly help President Obama politically, and then use the good news about jobs to attack the jobless again by pushing for benefits to expire for many long-term unemployed Americans?

Letting jobless benefits expire for many Americans is a cruel and heartless holiday punishment on the hurting by the Republicans.

House Republicans, whose favorability ratings in recent polls are approaching Saddam Hussein lows, and whose House candidates include many who need tutorials about how to respect women, now prepare to take another long recess from work while leaving many jobless Americans out in the cold without benefits.

Have they no shame? Congress should not leave for the year without enacting full jobless benefits, period. Republicans should recruit candidates who do not need lessons about how to pretend to respect women. The Speaker should heed the call to conscience of Francis and reject the calls for extremism from the radical right.

All jobless benefits should be fully extended or there should be no holiday party recess for Republicans.
