The Republican bondage scandal

By Brent Budowsky - 03/30/10 09:44 AM ET

This is too good to be true. It now appears as though the Republican National Committee authorized spending of almost $2,000 for an establishment that featured bondage. Of course, there are endless permutations for Democrats to suggest what this latest episode tells us about Republicans, but since I always take the high road, here are some key points:

This scandal was unearthed by (or handed to) the Daily Caller, the site founded by Tucker Carlson, a respected journalist who landed a great scoop. Who knows what is next, after the bondage affair, which raises some serious issues:

1. The Republican National Committee sure does like expensive, overpriced, exotic and luxurious ways of spending the money that its donors so unwisely provide. There obviously was no recession for these GOP stalwarts!

2. The Republican National Committee has certain deficiencies in its invoicing and accounting procedures that will no doubt enrage its donors and raise legitimate issues for the Federal Election Commission to investigate.

3. While I will take Republican Chairman Michael Steele at his word that he was not personally involved in the bondage scandal, he sure gives new meaning to "hands-off" management.

Mr. Steele should be removed forthwith as chairman, but Republicans appear stuck with him for the indefinite future, awaiting his next fiasco. After bondage, what will they think of next? Where do they get these guys?
