Let Limbaugh buy the Rams

By Bill Press - 10/13/09 06:45 PM ET

It’s a busy news cycle. There’s big news on healthcare, big news on Afghanistan, big news on the economy.

But let’s be honest. You walk into any restaurant or bar today and that’s not what they’re talking about. No, in the real world people are talking about the biggest issue of them all: Rush Limbaugh’s trying to buy the St. Louis Rams.

That very possibility is driving a lot of football fans crazy. And not just fans. DeMaurice Smith, head of the NFL Players Association, has written the head of the NFL urging him to reject Limbaugh’s bid.

Understandably, players weren’t happy with Limbaugh’s racist put-down of Donovan McNabb a few years ago. And they definitely haven’t forgotten his observation that watching two NFL teams play is like watching a gang fight between the Crips and the Bloods, only without weapons.

Given those past comments, should Limbaugh even be allowed to buy the Rams? Absolutely! As long as he makes the best offer and owners accept it.

After all, this is a free country, and we operate in a free market. No matter how obnoxious he is, Limbaugh should be able to buy any office building, hotel, airline or sports team he wants.

He’s free to buy the team, but we’re also free to boycott it. To me, that would be the best of all possible worlds. Limbaugh buys the Rams. And then players refuse to play, fans refuse to show up, sportswriters refuse to cover the games — and Pigskin Limbaugh falls flat on his face. Please, God, let it happen.
