Blame it on Rio!

By Cheri Jacobus - 10/02/09 01:14 PM ET

Obama put his credibility on the line as leader of the free world by personally making a case to the International Olympic Committee for Chicago.

Not only did he lose — he lost bad. Chicago was rejected in the first round, a stinging, stunning rebuke of the first U.S. president in history to personally lobby to have the Olympics held in this country. The fact that it was Obama's hometown makes it particularly embarrassing. Rio won. Obama lost.

The decision to go, and those who advised Obama to go are — very simply — stupid. And as I pointed out in my column today in The Hill, it serves to raise an awful lot of uncomfortable questions for President Obama to answer or ignore or obfuscate on regarding what and whom were behind this politically ill-advised push to have him travel to Copenhagen, Denmark, where the risks of embarrassment were monumental.

Questions, questions, questions. Will we ever get the answers?
