Taking your eye off the ball

By Armstrong Williams - 10/05/09 11:44 AM ET

I just finished watching President Barack Obama give some comments this morning on the topic of healthcare reform and the need for Congress to move judiciously this week. The appearance of the president was far more important than anything he could have said. You see, he’s been AWOL on this subject while globetrotting to Copenhagen, Denmark, for a wasted attempt at bringing the 2016 Olympics to his backyard in Chicago.

I’ll only spend a few minutes on the topic, because I thought it was so poorly contrived and shortsighted. Why would the leader of the free world burn valuable political chits for a city that spent more time explaining why the Olympics would be good for Chicago and not heralding why Chicago would be ideal for the Olympics? That was Mayor Daley’s major weakness. He was so obsessed with plugging the Windy City’s budget gaps from the expected billion dollars in revenue the IOC pledged to the winning host city that he spent hardly any time on actually promoting the city’s venues and appeal (children mobbed in the street notwithstanding).

But the one who most has egg on his face is the president. I’m no foreign policy expert, but even I knew Rio was a certain shoo-in simply due to the fact that South America had never hosted the Games in modern times. Did Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton not see those signs? Just what kind of intel was the White House feeding its boss before his trip? If there was even a doubt, he shouldn’t have gone. It looked more like Chicago-style mob pressure on Obama to attend than his pulling a Tony Blair and securing the win. Besides, the former prime minister was peddling London, folks. This is an international city built on centuries of notoriety. Compare that to … Chicago? I love the town, but a London it is not. It hardly qualifies as “international.”

On to other topics … The White House is now toying with the idea of changing the 1993 policy on gays in the military. Can someone please remind this administration that we are in the midst of battling a war on two fronts, an economic recession only just now ending, record unemployment and spending and a trillion-dollar check being drafted on healthcare? Does the president feel he doesn’t have enough on his plate, or just the wrong items?

He has clearly taken his eye off the legislative ball, focusing instead on issues that seem to matter most to every one of his leftist friends. What’s next, school uniforms?

Yes, the Rose Garden speech this morning was needed, on so many levels. But the biggest antagonist to the president’s agenda seems to be the distractions he himself has conjured up.

Armstrong. And this surprises you. Anyone who took any time looking into The Messiah, prior to and since the election, could not help but notice he is an empty suit. His oratory ability is great. But one needs to have something to say from deep within if he is going to lead this once great country. He is a puppet and the Puppetmiesters are in totally over their head. Enjoy the squirming for what you see is what you get.BY J Edgar Swoop on 10/05/2009 at 13:46
Armstrong, I can understand that we are in the midst of battling a war on two fronts, an economic recession only just now ending, record unemployment and spending and a trillion-dollar check being drafted on healthcare. But, let me also remind those who read that we have men and women who have fought and given their lives for this country, the same country that promotes freedom and yet their basic freedom is being denied them. The president can and should be skilled at multitasking - it's called delegation. His administration and congress should be able to get a bill to his desk that he can sign and in the interim he should sign an executive order stopping the firing of valuable men and women such as Lt. Dan Choi adn Lt. Col Fehrenbach. It is pathetic to know that in this country, we can't get over this issue of sexual orientation - mind you this is not about disciplinary issues but orientation. At an estimate there are some 65,000 troops that are gay and to think that they have to live that are not true is sad. Make this a political issue if you like but I'd like to see those who are heterosexual go without speaking to their spouse and family for 6 months while on deployment and then we can call it even. Let them not be able to talk about their spouse while at work, no pictures, no special gifts that are displayed, nothing; make them non existent. Let them have no one on the pier as the ship pulls in. Let them lie about who they were with the night before when asked directly. Something tells me that dog won't hunt for long. As I stated before and will say again, I do realize that the presidents plate is full, but when you campaigned that you would be a fierce advocate for the LGBT community and we have not heard peep, something is not right. http://vodpod.com/watch/2097326-signorile-and-lcrs-moran-talk-obama-and-gay-rights-on-cnnWhen I asked my buddy Webster what FIERCE meant - he said this: "1 a : violently hostile or aggressive in temperament b : given to fighting or killing : pugnacious2 a : marked by unrestrained zeal or vehemence b : extremely vexatious, disappointing, or intense 3 : furiously active or determined 4 : wild or menacing in appearance" Which one describes our president? 1, 2, 3, 4, or None of the above. You tell me???BY Inspired2b on 10/05/2009 at 14:49
This President is for this president not for the country and the people of the country. Look at what he is doing for the unemployed extending benefits. He is not helping them find a job unless they are looking at Washington D.C., yea the federal government hiring but the hell with private industry. He wants people suffering and relying on the government to solve there problems. He wants a Soviet Union So[***]t Republic and the hell with the country he is doing every thing to accomplish his goal!BY William on 10/06/2009 at 10:13
