Congratulations, Mr. President

By Armstrong Williams - 10/09/09 12:53 PM ET

Dear Mr. President:

As an American citizen and a man who takes pride in every great American effort to achieve peace and justice around the world, I am honored and pleased that you have been granted the Nobel Peace Prize.

I hope that this prize serves not only as a recognition of the promise that you bring but will also become a symbol of all that you will and can achieve. We face many serious and challenging problems around the world. These critical issues include: The aids epidemic. Nuclear proliferation. Ongoing civil wars and refugee crises. The threat of terrorism around the globe.

In order to meet these challenges it will take your strong leadership and perseverance. Please know that I and other Americans, regardless of our political differences, will stand by you in every noble American effort to achieve peace.

I believe today is a day for every American citizen to celebrate, but also a day for everyone of us to recommit ourselves to the difficult and important work of achieving true peace and security around the world.
