The funny thing about right-wing Republicans is that they can dish it out, but they can't take it. Consider the case of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). I was one of the first to write about his cheap shots against the war hero and veterans’ champion Chuck Hagel, who is supported for Defense secretary by a virtual who's who of Republican national security experts, especially those who served President Reagan.

Don’t blame Ted Cruz, he’s only doing what he said he would do if elected. The wave of national media attention surrounding the freshman senator late last week followed a traditional groupthink pattern. First it was a Reuters national wire story early in the week, then the Politico story late Thursday, The New York Times story Friday, alongside columns by Ruth Marcus in The Washington Post and Frank Bruni in the Times, and a segment on MSNBC’s “Hardball” on Friday.

As today is Presidents Day, it occurs to the MSM — which from here on out will be called “the legitimate press” (LP) thanks to that indomitable future president, Joe Biden — that we are called to harken back. Few will, no doubt, recede in meditation on a singular vision of Franklin Pierce, the 14th president, who barely registers a Wiki acknowledgement. And a few this year have even suggested that the whole idea of a "Presidents Day” makes no sense.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. family is a major part of our national history, and slander is a necessarily public injustice. Undoing this injustice must, in turn, be public.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) admitted earlier this week, in a press briefing before the State of the Union, that Republicans are no longer committed to pushing tax reform this year because the effort might be a waste of time. "There's a debate going on about whether we can get to the kind tax reform we want given the outcome of the election," Boehner said, adding that the GOP would "love" to simplify the code and lower rates for all. Yet, in doubting the end result, Boehner is questioning the merits of the effort, and asked "why go through all of that effort if it isn't going anywhere, or why go through that effort if the outcome would be unacceptable?"

First I should note that I will be phasing down my contributions on this
Pundits blog soon, to devote more attention to other national websites
that seek original content. Before continuing my series about why Texas
(and Florida) are going blue, check out my new column "Break up the banks."
I can report serious interest from some in high finance about the
suggestion for a dramatic cut in capital gains taxes for investors in
banks that voluntarily break up the "too big to fail" institutions. For
today, I have an idea to accelerate the story of Texas (and Florida)
going blue, a theme that is exciting Texas Democrats and interesting a
growing number of national media including, now, Politico. Demographics are destiny. The blue future for Texas and Florida is certain. The question is when.
