The president spoke for quite a while about Iraq and Iran at his press conference. He attempted once again to make a case for his escalation and to downplay the growing revolt within his own party over his policy.
On Tuesday, I was quite surprised to see Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) flip out: If we don’t “win” in Iraq, he said, we would have to fight “them” over here. Oh, that is Boehner being Boehner, I thought.

Perfect timing. The president holds a press conference when the country is engulfed in a blizzard, when Washington is paralyzed (doesn’t take much), schools are closed, government is opening two hours late, and reporters are ready for a slow day.
What do we get? Another shot at Iran for allowing weapons to penetrate into Iraq. Folks, Iraq has more weapons than Carter has liver pills — all the borders are sieves and we have been unable to identify and destroy more than a single large cache of bombs and weapons in the past year. They are everywhere.

According to the Gallup Poll, the percentage of Americans who rate current economic conditions as "excellent or good" rose from 42% on December 11-14, 2006 to 52% on January 15-18, 2007.

While Mitt Romney, this week's New Kid on the candidate block, may be scraping bottom in polls of Republicans, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) seems to take him as a serious threat. He couldn't wait even one day after Romney's entrance into the race to brag of Romney defections to his campaign.

Mitt Romney (R) might be the only presidential candidate to lose before he announces his candidacy. His announcement yesterday comes after two months of freefall in most polls as voters discover that he has been inconsistent in his positions on abortion and gay rights. Now, to add to the impression of flipping and flopping, he is attempting to re-create himself as a son of Michigan rather than the adopted son of Massachusetts.

Here we go again. Another presidential candidate sticks his foot in his mouth.
This time, it’s not Joe Biden. It’s Barack Obama, under fire for his comment, last weekend in Iowa, that the Iraq war “should never have been waged, and on which we’ve now spent $400 billion, and have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted.”

The Washington Press Corps continues to salivate over the Scooter Libby trial, even as the rest of the world seems more enamored with the death of former super-model Anna Nicole Smith. Hard to believe that either of these stories warrants much attention, but I find the Libby trial more interesting for the comments it produces not by the witnesses, but by the so-called "unbiased" analysts.

Its a neat trick, but the Democrats are alienating both the left and the right on Iraq at the same time. The right resents their resolution disapproving of the Bush troop surge, arguing that it undermines troop morale and encourages the enemy. The left is outraged because this phony, symbolic action is just a demonstration of the essential weakness of the Democratic Party they elected to control Congress.

As I was half-listening to Tucker Carlson’s self-titled show on MSNBC yesterday afternoon, my attention was sparked when Mr. Carlson and political analyst Pat Buchannan discussed Senator Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) “60 Minutes” interview from the night before. Of interest to the two men was the comment by the senator’s wife regarding the security concerns of Obama, an African-American, in running for the nation’s highest office.
I was surprised to hear Messrs. Carlson and Buchannan, analysts with whom I am very friendly and see in green rooms from time to time, essentially dismiss the worry by Mrs. Obama that people would target her husband solely because he was an African-American running for the presidency. Let me tell you gentlemen: the threat is real.

All these Iraq war resolutions, and so little time. The voters really have spoken on this war, not only in recent polls but at the ballot box. The sooner that members of Congress realize it the better for the country, and the better for them.
The House vote this week will mean something, especially with the growing consensus from the public that Congress has to step in and talk sense to this President. Many Republicans, for the first time, are going to break with President Bush and his war policies. And unless some miracle occurs in Iraq over the next few months there will be a growing chorus of Republican and Democratic opposition to the president.
That, after all, is what his father is truly worried about. He predicted the horror of occupation in his book in the early 90's. Now he sees his son being destroyed by the war that he warned against. Permanent occupation, no exit strategy, civil war, loss of lives, huge cost. The handwriting was on the wall and President H.W Bush saw it. For him, this must be like a bad dream
