Bush in a Good Position to Pick a Fight

By A.B. Stoddard
Some more suspension votes are up on the floor of the House today as the heavy lifting goes on behind closed doors. Democratic leaders there are at work on their opening political salvo against the Iraq war, a resolution opposing the troop increase scheduled for a vote next week. After seeing just how easily a symbolic statement was gummed up by the opposition on the Senate side, the House is intent on drastically lowering expectations. Read more...

Libby Trial is a Joke — a Bad Joke

By Peter Fenn
The Libby trial is a joke. Of course, he didn’t tell the truth about his actions. But who really cares about Libby anyway?

OK, that is overstated, but the real deal here is the cover-up, the lies and misrepresentations from the president, the vice president, Rove, McClellan, et al. Look, has Fitzgerald caught Libby with a perjury charge? Sure, but the key here is the White House whitewash. Read more...

New Majority Needs to Learn to Break Knees

By A.B. Stoddard
Hey, Rove and Bush ain't dead yet. Let's hand it to them for dividing and conquering. In just days, the administration managed to stop serious momentum against the troop increase in Iraq, pulling (OK, perhaps strangling) all Republican senators on board to vote against the Democrats instead. Everyone in the Senate GOP caucus relented, joined of course by Sen. Joe Lieberman (Independent Democrat of Connecticut), except for Sens. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine). Even Sens. John Warner (R-Va.) and Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) voted against resolutions they supported. Why? Because the White House is buying time and Republicans were willing to sell it to them. Sen. Joe Lieberman: True Courage in the Face of Posturing, Weak-Kneed Politicians Seeking to Exploit Our Troops

By Ron Christie
Anyone looking for statesmanship in the U.S. Senate should look no further than the remarks given this evening by Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) as he discussed the non-binding resolution registering disapproval with the president’s plan to increase troops and win the war in Iraq. Despite the posturing given by Democrats and weak-kneed Republicans that the non-binding resolution will send an important message to the president, Lieberman challenged his colleagues to have the courage to state their true intentions and vote on a resolution to cut off funding for the war. That is a step they will never take, of course.     Read more...

Will America’s Mayor become America’s next President?

By Ron Christie
Apparently, now he’s in. After filing exploratory papers last November, Rudy Giuliani has apparently taken the next step towards becoming a full-fledged candidate to become the next president of the United States. The action by America’s Mayor puts him on the same legal footing as Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R). Read more...

Shame! Shame! Shame! Not the way to treat the Godfather of Soul

By Armstrong Williams
In case you didn’t know it, James Brown has yet to be buried. His body lay in a sealed gold casket in his Greenville, S.C. mansion. All of your condolences and the wonderful send-off to a better place for this great individual have been stalled by his six children and his longtime partner.

Over a month after his death, legal wrangling over Brown’s estate has prevented the singing icon from receiving a proper burial. And despite considerable precedents in cases like this (Elvis Presley wasn’t buried for 90 days because of legal issues; Ted Williams’s family feuded for months over whether to freeze or cremate his body), the man deserves to be buried immediately. This is Obama's Moment

By A.B. Stoddard
After Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) stepped on his moment, announcing her presidential intentions the day before his would blanket the Sunday shows, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has the spotlight back — for now.

As he prepares for his official kick-off this weekend in Illinois, Obama is enjoying a growing movement created by facebook.com to sign up 1 million Obama supporters. While Clinton dominated the news, Obama has shaken off his first challenges as a candidate: He torpedoed the madrassah story, and to the comments by Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) that Obama is the first mainstream, articulate African-American to run for president, Obama responded respectfully — to Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Biden as well. Feingold bill puts Hillary, Obama on the Spot

By Dick Morris
Despite Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-N.Y.) increasingly shrill rhetoric about the war in Iraq and her promise that she would "end it" as president and Sen. Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) legislation to set a timetable to pull out all troops by March 2008, the real stakes were set forth by Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), who has proposed the Iraq Redeployment Act of 2007 to end all funds for the war after six months (excluding a small number of troops to train Iraqi forces).

Massive Public Support for Action on Global Warming

By Dick Morris
The American public has decided that global warming exists and that it is partially caused by human activity. This overwhelming consensus is evident in the Fox News poll of January 30-31. Asked if global warming is taking place, Americans said it was by 82-10. Even Republicans said it was happening by 74-21. And is it caused by human activity, natural causes, or both? 41% said it was man-caused, 10% said it was naturally triggered, and 38% said both were at fault. So 79% reject the conservative contention that global warming is not caused by human activity. Even Republicans rejected that view; 30% said warming was exclusively caused by humans and 21% said it was due entirely to natural causes. But 42% said both were causes. So 72% of Republicans disagree with the right wing of their party which says that global warming is not caused by human activity and cannot be reduced by mitigating it.

Obama Moves Left?

By Dick Morris
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has introduced legislation calling for total withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by March 2008. In doing so, he has moved to the left of Hillary, who has advocated withdrawal but refuses to commit to a specific deadline. The key question for the Democratic nomination is whether Obama will join Edwards on the left or Hillary on the right in approaching the war in Iraq.

The litmus test is likely to come after Congress passes a resolution disapproving of Bush’s troop surge and after Bush sends the troops in anyway. At that point liberals like Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) are likely to push for a funding cutoff on the additional troops. Hillary has said she would vote against the cutoff, and Edwards can be counted upon to advocate it. If Obama sides with Edwards he will have a real chance at the nomination, but if he sides with Hillary he probably will count himself out. According to the Fox News poll, Democrats favor a cutoff of all funding for the war by 58 to 33. Support for a cutoff of funding of the Bush troop surge is likely to be even higher. The question for Obama is: Does he join the 58s or the 33s?
