White House considering new ‘Race to the Top' rules
An updated set of proposed rules governing the Obama administration’s competitive educational grant program known as “Race to the Top” has been submitted to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review.
The proposal, drafted by the Department of Education, contains draft requirements, priorities and selection criteria for the program, which was created in 2009 with a $4.35 billion cash-infusion from President Obama’s economic stimulus bill.
Under the program, states are awarded points for meeting certain educational standards. Those that collect the most points are rewarded with grant money.
The updated regulations for the program attracted scores of comments. The Education department submitted the proposal to OMB on Monday, according to White House records.
