News bites: Obama administration calls killing Americans in al Qaeda legal

An unsigned Justice Department white paper says it would be lawful to kill a United States citizen who served as a ranking figure in al Qaeda and posed “an imminent threat of violent attack against the United States,” The New York Times reports.

The federal government’s lawsuit seeking to block a major beer company merger follows a tested game plan, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Federal and state regulators responsible for overseeing toxic waste disposal are spread thin, according to ProPublica.

Washington is the latest state to move on legislation exempting from forthcoming federal regulations any ammunition and firearms manufactured within its boundaries, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports.
