Advocates of campaign finance reform are pushing the new chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to make waves by exposing the political spending of corporations.
The Corporate Reform Coalition on Tuesday said 500,000 people, including more than 80 members of Congress, have signed a petition backing mandatory disclosure of political donations by publicly trade companies. They want SEC Chairwoman Mary Jo White to champion the cause.
“It's time for the SEC to step up to the plate,” said New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has until further notice blocked flights under 3,000 feet within a 2.3-mile radius centered on the location of Monday’s explosions, The Associated Press reports.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) plans to issue a cease-and-desist order JPMorgan Chase & Co. for failing to report suspicious activity during the Bernie Madoff affair, according to an exclusive report from Reuters. The order would require JPMorgan to put an end to failures in its anti-money laundering practices.
The Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) are pushing back their deadline for large banks to submit their “living wills” to the financial regulators, The Wall Street Journal reports. (subscription required)

The conservative Federalist Society on Monday unveiled a new project aimed at holding the Obama administration accountable for its use of executive power.
The Executive Branch Review Project is designed to chronicle the promulgation of rules and regulations via a new blog and public forums to discuss the issue.
“We’re seeing an all time high in executive activity, particularly regulatory activity,” David McIntosh, a former Republican congressman from Indiana who serves as vice chairman of The Federalist Society, said during a conference call with supporters and reporters.

The Food and Drug Administration had received "a litany of complaints" about the companies tied to a deadly meningitis outbreak, House Republicans said Monday. Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee said the FDA had received specific complaints about the safety and sterility of drugs manufactured by the companies tied to the outbreak. Energy and Commerce Republicans released more information from their meningitis investigation ahead of a hearing Tuesday at which FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg is scheduled to testify.

The American Lung Association and other health groups are asking federal regulators to ban menthol in cigarettes.
The groups says the minty taste is just as effective at getting smokers hooked as other flavorings that were banned under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009.
