Western Senate Dems want more oversight of energy traders

Six Senate Democrats from Western states called Monday upon financial regulators to broaden forthcoming Dodd-Frank Act regulations to encompass a larger segment of energy markets.

In a letter to Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Gary Gensler, the lawmakers say proposed Dodd-Frank rules designed to increase oversight of the swaps market are insufficient.

News bites: Unions uniting against immigration bill provisions

A pair of unions representing roughly 20,000 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employees contends the policy changes required Senate legislation would weaken public safety, according to The New York Times.

The 844-page legislation would direct agencies to enact a raft of new regulations and new layers of bureaucracy, RegWatch reported upon the bill's introduction last month.

High-speed trading has become a major challenge for financial regulators, according to FOX Business.

The long-simmering fight over genetically modified food has flared up in Washington, where new rules are under consideration, RegWatch reports.

In Southern California, regulators are eyeing a crack down on beach fires, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Across the pond, the British Government is considering whether to embark on an effort to reduce the burden of excessive or unnecessary regulation, according to MoneyMarketing.

FCC scraps 126 telecom regulations

The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously on Friday to lift 126 requirements on phone companies that it said had become outdated.

The regulatory rollback came on Chairman Julius Genachowski's last day in office.

The FCC scrapped a requirement that phone companies keep paper records in addition to digital copies and a rule for prepaid calling card companies that required 15,000 hours of compliance work annually, the commission said. One rule required certain companies to label and track every piece of central office equipment, no matter how small.
