Rep. Mica fires back at Senate majority leader: 'I have a life'
Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.) shot back at Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday, telling the senator that he doesn't need to "get a life" because he already has one.
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman has launched an investigation into the General Services Administration's (GSA) culture of lavish spending that led the agency to bill the taxpayers $823,000 for a conference in Las Vegas.
Soon after Mica’s announcement earlier this month, Reid delivered a sharp blow, telling the lower chamber lawmaker to “get a life.” Some in the press have raised questions about how the GSA scandal will affect the business and reputation of Las Vegas, where the extravagant federal conference took place.
“First of all, Mica, who is doing this, should get a life and do what he's supposed to do,” said Reid to a group of reporters in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “It's because of him that the transportation bill is a total failure."
The House Rules Committee is scheduled to consider a sequel to the transportation bill, which includes language authorizing the controversial Keystone oil pipeline that was rejected earlier this year by President Obama.
But on Tuesday, Mica fired back at Reid, telling the Nevada lawmaker that he was "saddened" by his comments and that he, in fact, does have a life.
“When I announced I was going to do hearings on this, I was pretty saddened by comments of the majority leader of the U.S. Senate,” said Mica at Tuesday’s hearing on the GSA scandal.
“He said, ‘Mica needs to get a life.’ Well, I want to tell him and others that I have a life and that’s dedicated to uncovering waste and inefficiency in the federal government and bringing business-type common-sense practices, whether it’s GSA or other federal agencies."
