Tea Party Express endorses Rep. Sandy Adams in GOP primary over Rep. Mica
An influential Tea Party group on Monday endorsed Rep. Sandy Adams (R-Fla.) in her member-versus-member primary against fellow Republican Rep. John Mica (Fla.).
Tea Party Express said Adams was a better choice for central Florida lawmakers than Mica, the long-term House Transportation Committee chairman.
"The Tea Party is not just about sending new conservatives to Washington, we also want to defend those that have been principled conservative voices," Tea Party Express Chairwoman Amy Kremer said in a statement released by Adams's campaign. "Rep. Sandy Adams was elected in 2010 on a wave of Tea Party support, and I am proud to be able to stand here today and reaffirm our support."
“Our campaign has been built on the grassroots support of people who are fed up with business as usual in Washington and want to fix the way Congress works," she said in a statement. "They support our campaign of fiscal responsibility, limited government and repealing ObamaCare. Together, we will show the country that the conservative movement is stronger than ever.”
Adams and Mica are in one of the most contentious intraparty fights since congressional districts were redrawn after the 2010 elections, and will face off in an Aug. 14 primary.
The battle between the two Florida lawmakers has intensified, with Mica's campaign on Monday accusing Adams of breaking House rules by using floor footage critical of the Transportation chairman in a campaign ad. Adams's campaign called the charge from Mica's team "desperate."
