Report: Obama mulling Charlotte Mayor Foxx for DOT chief

By Keith Laing - 03/20/13 03:15 PM ET

President Obama is reportedly considering appointing Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx (D) to run the transportation department in his second term.

Foxx is under serious consideration to replace outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who has announced he is retiring this year, according to a report from Bloomberg News.

Foxx was elected mayor of Charlotte in 2009. Charlotte is where Obama was nominated for a second term last year.

The city has won praise for constructing a light rail line that opened in 2007, and Foxx has overseen its expansion efforts.

The report said Foxx is being considered in addition to National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Deborah Hersman, who was rumored to be a leading contender for much of February.

LaHood has said that he will remain in office until his successor is chosen and confirmed by the Senate.
