American Future Fund launches Janesville GM plant ad
A conservative group is airing a new commercial featuring Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's disputed comments about the closing of a General Motors plant in his home state.
The ad, called "Janesville," is being run by the American Future Fund. It features footage of the Wisconsin lawmaker criticizing President Obama for the closing of a General Motors plant in Ryan's congressional district.
Democrats have pointed out that the plant was first scheduled to close under former President George W. Bush, and they have accused Ryan of purposely lying to voters about the issue.
But the AFF ad doubles down on the idea that the plants closing is Obama's fault.
"I believe that if our government is there to support you, and give the assistance you need to retool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another 100 years," the ad shows Obama saying in a speech from February of 2008, almost a year before he took office.
"It is locked up and empty to this day," Ryan continued. "And that's how it is in so many towns, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight."
The ad closes with the slogan "President Obama. Hopeful words. Disappointing results."
Fact-checking websites like PolitiFact.com took Ryan to task for blaming Obama for the Janesville plant closing, rating the VP nominee's argument false because the facility was shut down before Obama took office.
