Fires delay flights at busy Miami airport

By Keith Laing - 03/25/11 02:18 PM ET

Fires at Miami International Airport led to the cancellation of almost 200 flights Friday morning.

American Airlines canceled 174 incoming and outgoing flights at the airport after multiple fuel tanks caught fire, the Miami Herald reported.

The tanks were holding 8 million gallons of gasoline, which is used to refuel planes while they are at airport gates, the paper said.

Airport spokesman Greg Chin said travelers should expect delays throughout the day Friday.

“Starting tomorrow, we should improve,” Chin told the Herald. “Even better are some high performance pumps that should arrive early next week from Texas. Those will get us back to near normal operations.”

In 2010, Miami Airport was the second-busiest international departure point in the U.S., with more than 8 million passengers departing the country from there.
