Airline employment up

Airlines employed 7,500 more people in February 2011 than a year ago, according to statistics released on Friday.

The Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics said there were 570,705 full- and part-time airline employees in February 2011, up from 564,119 in February 2010. The February numbers were also an increase of 919 over January 2011, the BTS said.

The largest airline employer was FedEx, with 143,025 workers. The largest commercial airline employer was Delta, which had 83,831 employees, and the largest commuter airline employer was Pinnacle Air, which had 3,981 workers.
