American Airlines reassures passengers its seats are securely fastened

By Keith Laing - 10/08/12 01:18 PM ET

American Airlines is trying to reassure its passengers that their seats will not be moving during future flights.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said last week that it was investigating two separate incidents where a row of seats on one of the airline's 757 airplanes become loose mid-flight.

But American said in a statement that it has checked the seats on the remainder of its 757 airplanes, and they are securely in place.

"All 48 of our Boeing 757s are back in service," American said in a statement. "Our maintenance teams secured an FAA-approved locking mechanism to ensure no seat can be dislodged. Repairs are complete on all aircraft and the airline is no longer impacted by this process. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, as safety and reliability are always of utmost priority."

The FAA launched its investigation after American Flights 685 and 443 from Boston and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Miami both made emergency landings at JFK last weekend.

The agency said American's initial inspection of the planes that were taken out of service found "other rows of seats that were not properly secured," leading to eight planes with similar seat parts being grounded.
