Reports: 787 'Dreamliner' gas leak confirmed

By Keith Laing - 01/14/13 12:00 PM ET

Fluid that was leaking from a Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" airplane last week has been confirmed to be fuel, according to media reports.

The airplane, which was discovered to be leaking before a flight from Tokyo, had experienced similar problems in tested conducted the day of its scheduled flight, according to a report from CNN. The plane, which was being operated by Japan Airlines, was taken out of service.

The incident was among a series of mishaps with the new jetliner that have sparked an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The agency promised last week to conduct a "a comprehensive review of Boeing 787 critical systems, including the design, manufacture and assembly."

Even as the FAA was announcing its review, however, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood sought to downplay concerns about the safety of the 787.

"I believe this plane is safe, and I would have absolutely no reservations of boarding one of these planes and taking a flight," LaHood said in a news conference on Friday. "These planes are safe."
