Airline suspending flights to Libya

By Keith Laing - 02/05/13 02:37 PM ET

Lufthansa Airlines is suspending its flights to Libya because of concerns about unrest in the country.

The airline said in a statement that it "does not offer flights from and to Tripoli at the moment," citing "the current development of the local circumstances and the tense situation in the region."

A spokeswoman for the German company told The Hill that "[T]here are no indications that Lufthansa flights might be threatened."

Security conditions in Libya has been the focus of international scrutiny since a Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi that left four American citizens dead, including former U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Lufthansa previously canceled flights to Tripoli, which is Libya's capital city, in 2011 following the uprising against the country's former leader, Muammar Gaddafi.
