Report: American Airlines, U.S. Airways agree to merger

By Keith Laing - 02/13/13 04:51 PM ET

American Airlines and U.S. Airways have agreed to merge into one airline, according to a media report.

The combination of the two airlines has long been expected since U.S. Airways began making bids for American after the latter airline entered bankruptcy in 2011.

The agreement is now final, pending the approval of the airlines' respective boards of directors, according to a report Wednesday from Bloomberg News.

The merger could be officially announced as early as Thursday, according to the report.

The report said U.S. Airways CEO Doug Parker is expected to named leader of the merged airline and the company is expected to use American's name.

A merger between the two airlines would have to be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Justice because of anti-trust rules.
