Petri defended that the sequestration budget cuts that were implemented earlier this year should not impact the DOT’s decision because Congress passed legislation to restore funding for air traffic controllers earlier this spring.
“Congress moved quickly to restore funding for air traffic control operations following sequestration,” he wrote. “Ensuring safety and providing air traffic control is a core mission of the FAA, and it is hard to understand that the FAA would not provide air traffic services at the largest general aviation event in the world with 20,000 air operations.”
Petri moved to defend the request from criticism of that the private jet industry caters mostly to wealthy individuals.
"We should not lose sight of the fact that GA [general aviation] contributes to the Aviation Trust Fund,” he wrote. “It is estimated that the Trust Fund may gain as much as $300,000 from the fuel taxes paid by GA pilots attending EAA each year.”
